Alleviate Discomfort & Improve Oral Health

Dental professionals work hard to save your natural tooth, but when an extraction is required, oral surgeons are highly trained and skilled to perform your procedure comfortably and with precision. When you come to see us for your first visit at one of our practice locations in Pocatello and Blackfoot, your oral surgeon will work with you to a create a treatment plan for your extraction and, if you wish, discuss restoring your smile with a lifelike tooth restoration such as a dental implant.

We perform safe and expert tooth extractions in the comfort of our welcoming Pocatello and Blackfoot offices with multiple anesthesia options to ensure you are comfortable and at ease. Unless the extraction is complex, we use local anesthesia for extractions. During the procedure, you will be conscious and aware during treatment but will not feel any sensation of pain. If you tend to feel anxious during dental procedures, please let us know — our doctors are dedicated to your well-being and can provide you with additional options for your anesthesia, such as in-office intravenous (IV) sedation or sedation dentistry for our patients who may be feeling anxious about their procedure.

Why Do I Need To Have a Tooth Removed?

Crowns, fillings, and root canals are some of the techniques that dental professionals use to try to save a natural tooth, but sometimes, a tooth is too damaged to repair, or it may be endangering the health of the surrounding teeth. Sometimes, a healthy tooth will need to be removed if there is not enough room in the mouth, such as in a wisdom teeth removal procedure, or as part of an orthodontic or oral surgery treatment plan.

Your tooth may need to be extracted if:

  • Your teeth are overcrowded.
  • Previous treatments have failed to save the tooth.
  • The damage to the tooth cannot be repaired.
  • Your tooth is trapped under the gums (impaction).
  • You have advanced gum disease.
  • You have a severe infection or tooth decay.
  • You have malformed teeth.
  • Your oral surgeon is preparing your mouth for dental implants or other oral surgery treatment.

Our patients have shared their personal stories about their extractions to help you feel more at ease about your own procedure.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

Prior to your tooth extraction, you'll have a consultation with Dr. Baker or Dr. Jepsen. During this appointment, he will evaluate your oral health and discuss the most suitable anesthesia options for you. While local anesthesia is typically sufficient for straightforward extractions, IV sedation may be recommended for more complex cases or for patients with dental anxiety, ensuring a comfortable experience.

On the day of your procedure, anesthesia will be administered. Once you are fully anesthetized, Dr. Baker or Dr. Jepsen will gently remove the tooth using methods designed to minimize trauma to the surrounding tissues. After the extraction, the area will be thoroughly cleaned, and you will receive detailed aftercare instructions to promote a smooth recovery.

Recovery After Tooth Extraction

Recovery from a tooth extraction is usually uncomplicated. To prevent infection and keep the extraction site clean, rinse your mouth with a saltwater solution as directed. Pain medication may be prescribed to help manage discomfort during the healing process. Following the provided instructions carefully will ensure optimal healing. If you encounter any issues such as excessive bleeding or severe pain, please contact our office for assistance.

Anesthesia Options

Oral Surgery Specialists of Idaho offers the following types of in-office anesthesia and sedation.

Tooth Replacement Options After Extraction

Following a tooth extraction, it's crucial to consider replacement options to maintain oral function and avoid future complications.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are a preferred choice, providing the appearance, feel, and function of natural teeth. These implants are surgically placed into the jawbone, where they fuse with the bone to form a solid foundation for crowns or bridges. Additionally, dental implants stimulate the jawbone, preserving facial structure and preventing bone loss.

Immediate Dental Implants

For those with a healthy jawbone and a noticeable gap, same-day dental implants are an option. These implants allow for a temporary crown to be placed immediately, eliminating the need for a second procedure later on.

Socket Preservation

Socket preservation is recommended for patients planning to receive dental implants in the future. This procedure maintains the size and shape of the tooth socket, preventing bone loss. By filling the empty socket with bone graft material, the mouth retains its structural integrity, reducing the risk of shifting teeth and ensuring a stable foundation for future implants.

No Replacement

It is highly recommended to replace a tooth after extraction. Without a replacement, you risk jawbone atrophy, misalignment of remaining teeth, and bite problems. Consulting with our oral surgeons will help you explore the best options to avoid these potential issues.
