Prepare For a Better Smile

It’s a wonderful thing when dentures fit well and comfortably, but when they don’t, there are very effective pre-prosthetic surgery treatments that can help. Pre-prosthetic surgery is an oral surgery treatment that is commonly performed at our practice to ensure that a patient’s partial or complete denture is comfortable and fits properly in the mouth.

An ill-fitting denture can make eating and speaking a painful or embarrassing chore, and sores can develop in the mouth as well. For denture wearers, it is crucial that the bony ridge that normally supports teeth (called the alveolar ridge) is the proper shape and size to comfortably support the denture. For the best fit, the bony ridge can be smoothed, or reshaped, and excess bone can be removed.

Drs. Baker and Jepsen have many years of experience performing successful pre-prosthetic surgery procedures to ensure that their patients have a denture that fits correctly. Pre-prosthetic surgeries have very few risks for the patient and are performed by our trusted doctors in the comfort and convenience of our practice locations in Pocatello and Blackfoot, ID.

Our caring staff will make sure you’re comfortable and relaxed with your choice of anesthesia, including sedation options that will help you feel more at ease for your treatment. We will keep an eye on you throughout the procedure, to ensure everything goes smoothly and there are no complications. Our team is here for you every step of the way.

Types of Pre-Prosthetic Surgery

Pre-prosthetic surgery can vastly improve your well-being by taking the discomfort out of important daily activities such as chewing and speaking. The inconsistencies in your jaw/alveolar ridge that need to be corrected to make these daily activities pleasurable again, depending on the type of dentures or other prosthetic devices you have or will be receiving, and your individual case. The following procedures are some of the pre-prosthetic surgeries we offer to allow your prosthetic devices, such as dentures, to feel good in your mouth:

  • Bone smoothing and/or reshaping
  • Bone ridge reduction/alveolar ridge reduction
  • Removal of excess bone or soft (gum) tissue
  • Bone or tissue grafting procedures
  • Exposure of impacted teeth (teeth that are stuck under the gums)

Your specific needs will be discussed in detail when you have your consultation for pre-prosthetic surgery with our trusted oral surgeons, who will review your case with you to make sure we do the work that will benefit you the most. All our recommendations will be tailored to your individual needs, and we will do everything we can to make your pre-prosthetic surgery experience go smoothly.
