Dr. Mark Baker has been part of Facial & Oral Surgery Associates for over twenty years. He loves being a Pocatello Oral Surgeon, and has deep ties with the community.
His journey to become a Pocatello Oral Surgeon began in Sacramento California, where he graduated with honors at Valley High School. Although he loved sports like many other boys his age, he also enjoyed learning and writing, and was given the “Gold Quill and Scroll Award” and “Outstanding Sportswriter of the Year”. He also developed a love of the Boy Scouts of America, and received his Eagle Scout when he was only 13 years old!
Dr. Baker served a mission for the LDS church to the Netherlands for two years, and decided that he wanted a job working closely with people. It didn’t take him long to pick dentistry as a logical choice, and he next attended college at Brigham Young University in Provo. While at BYU, he decided to study business and other topics in addition to biology prerequisites, because he know that being a successful practitioner requires a broad knowledge base of many different subjects. He was also deeply involved in the Pre-Dental club, and served as both a member and treasurer of this student organization. He participated as a research assistant for a study on the “Biologic Effects of Smoke Inhalation”, and worked as a Lab Aid and Teaching Assistant for human anatomy.
Dr. Baker was accepted to the University of Nebraska Medical Center – College of Dentistry, and received his DDS. While going through the intense schooling, Dr. Baker realized that he was really good at surgery, and he loved to do it. He decided that he would continue his education and focus on Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and participated in multiple Externships while at the University of Nebraska. He was a volunteer on many student organizations and committees, but one of his fondest memories is receiving the “Master Angler Award” as a Nebraska Sportsman. Fishing was a great way to relieve the stress of studying and working with patients.
The St. Johns Mercy Medical Center has an excellent program for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency, so Dr. Baker decided to pick up his family and head to St. Louis Missouri for his additional training. While at St. Johns Mercy Medical Center, Dr. Baker served as Chief Resident, and he enjoyed his rotations and the innovative training that he received.
Although Dr. Baker loves his work as an oral surgeon in Pocatello, he also is committed to increasing the health and well-being of under-served populations. He has visited Peru for Humanitarian Expeditions twice, through Idaho Condor and also Ascend Alliance.
Dr. Baker enjoys to spend time with his family, and he has helped his wife to raise ten beautiful kids! He is actively involved in scouting and in his church, but he also loves the excellent outdoor life in Southeast Idaho. It seems there are no end to the fun things that you can do in and around Pocatello, like camping, fishing, hunting, rafting, and horseback riding.
In addition, Dr. Baker enjoys attending community events, and gives guest training and lectures multiple times throughout the year to other dentists and professional organizations.
